Least Weasel Mustela nivalis
Habitat: The least weasel occupies meadows, grasslands, and woodlands and is commonest in marshy areas (J. K. Jones et al. 1983). On the margins of its range the species tends to be associated with riparian areas.
Diet: Not listed in Mammals of Colorado.
Description: The least weasel is the smallest carnivore in North America and is similar in color to the ermine, in both summer and winter pelages. However, the tail is one quarter the length of the head and body and it lacks a conspicuous black tip, although a few sparse black hairs may be present. Measurements are: total length 184-237 mm; length of tail 25-40 mm; hindfoot 16-31 mm; length of ear 11-14 mm (J. K. Jones 1964, Hall 1951).
Range in Colorado: The least weasel has not been documented in Colorado.
