Piping Plover Charadrius melodus
Habitat: It inhabits mudflats and shorelines of reservoirs and lakes. Breeding birds are found on sandy open shorelines with pebbles.
Range in Colorado: Very rare spring (23 records) and fall (19 records) migrant on eastern plains west to foothills. Accidental in mountain valleys (one record). This species has declined seriously in North America (Tate 1986), and therefore the Colorado breeding population is of national interest as well as local interest.
