Habitat: Short-grass grasslands and sometimes in wheatfields or fallow fields. Most nests are close to standing water, so that many otherwise suitable areas may be unoccupied (McCallum et al. 1977). Migrants also are seen on shorelines and in meadows and fields.
Range in Colorado: Fairly common local summer resident on southeastern plains. This species is most common in Baca County (McCallum et al. 1977), and also breeds in Prowers and Pawnee National Grassland, Weld County. Rare spring and fall migrant in western valleys, mountain parks, and on eastern plains. This species is on the National Audubon Society Special Concern List (Tate 1986) and is a candidate for listing under to Endangered Species Act (Knopf 1988).
Status: State Special Concern
