Canada Goose
Branta canadensis
Habitat: Reservoirs, ponds, gravel pits, rivers, marshes, wet meadows, croplands, city parks, and golf courses. On the plains near the northeastern foothills, birds nest mostly around reservoirs and gravel pits, while riverine areas are the main habitats in northwestern and northeastern Colorado (Colorado Division of Wildlife 1989). In winter and during migration, they occur primarily at reservoirs and feed in grainfields.
Range in Colorado: About 50,000–70,000 winter on the plains near northeastern foothills, 5,000–20,000 on extreme northeastern plains, and 20,000–30,000 in the Arkansas River valley in southeastern Colorado. Smaller numbers winter at Bonny Reservoir, Yuma County, and Two Buttes Reservoir, Baca County. Several thousand winter in the San Luis Valley and in the western valleys along the Green, Colorado, Gunnison, Uncompahgre, and Dolores rivers. Small numbers also nest in the Cortez area, Montezuma County, and statewide in foothills and mountains.
