Chickaree (Pine Squirrel) Tamiasciurus hudsonicus
Habitat: Pine squirrels are common throughout subalpine and montane forests, except in stands of ponderosa pine occupied by Abert's squirrels. Where Abert's squirrels are absent from ponderosa pine, pine squirrels can be expected, at least in low numbers. They also occasionally use riparian cottonwood stands (Armstrong 1972, Ferner 1974, Finley 1969, Hatt 1943).
Diet: Chickarees eat a variety of foods including buds, berries, and leaves of plants, although seeds of conifers and fleshy fungi are the staples (Obbard 1987).
Description: The summer pelage is usually more reddish than the grayer winter pelage. The eyes have a conspicuous white eye ring, and the venter is white. The tail is dark, ranging from blackish gray to reddish brown, often fringed with white. The ears may show tufts, longer in winter pelage. Measurements are: total length 300-350 mm; length of tail 115-135 mm; length of hindfoot 45-55 mm; length of ear 19-30 mm; weight 190-260 g.
Range in Colorado: The pine squirrel is common in suitable forested habitat in Colorado at elevations from 1,830 to 3,660 m (6,000-12,000 ft).
