Habitat: Semi-open forests or forest edges adjacent to parks, meadows, and alpine tundra
Diet: Grasses, shrubs, forbs
Description: The elk is a large cervid whose general body color is pale tan or brown. There is a contrastingly darker mane of long hairs on the neck and a paler yellowish tan rump patch. The tail is short and blends in with the rump patch. The hair is relatively long and coarse. The legs are long and the ears are large and conspicuous.
Range in Colorado: In Colorado the species ranges throughout the western two-thirds of the state generally at elevations above 1,800 m (6,000 ft), although occasionally elk are reported in the South Platte River drainage on the eastern plains.
