Eastern Cottontail Sylvilagus floridanus
Habitat: This cottontail occupies a wide variety of habitats and is common in brush, rank weeds, and grassy areas.
Diet: Eastern cottontails eat a variety of grasses and forbs. In winter the diet shifts to woody plants and buds, bark, twigs, and shoots from shrubs and smaller trees.
Description: The eastern cottontail is generally larger and darker than the other two cottontails in Colorado, and its ears are shorter relative to body size. Measurements are: total length 380-490 mm; length of tail 40-70 mm; length of hindfoot 75-111 mm; length of ear length 45-70 mm; weight 500-1,500 g.
Range in Colorado: In Colorado it occurs only below about 1,980 m (6,500 ft).
