Scaled Quail Callipepla squamata
Habitat: Most common in sand-sage grasslands, often interspersed with agricultural areas. Also occurs in shrublands and piņon-juniper woodlands. Often occurs in disturbed areas with an abundance of annual forbs, and in winter most birds are found around ranch yards or similar sites (Braun et al. 1991).
Range in Colorado: Fairly common resident on southeastern plains and mesas, west to foothills and north to Cheyenne, southern Lincoln, and southern El Paso counties. Rare local resident in southwestern La Plata County and southern Montezuma County, where it was probably introduced.
Status: CDOW Small Game Bird
