Hunting Sandhill Crane Page

 Sandhill Crane
 Grus canadensis

Habitat: Migrants occur on mudflats around reservoirs, in moist meadows, and in agricultural areas. Breeding birds are found in parks with grassy hummocks and watercourses, beaver ponds, and natural ponds lined with willows or aspens (Ellis and Haskins 1985, Renner et al. 1990).

Range in Colorado: Abundant spring and fall migrant in the San Luis Valley. It also occurs during fall on staging grounds in the Hayden area, Routt County. Common migrant, primarily in spring, in western valleys from Montrose County northward and east to Eagle and Gunnison counties. At the same time, this species is a migrant on eastern plains, where it is often locally abundant in fall but is usually rare in spring. In fall in both western valleys and eastern plains, large flocks sometimes stop at reservoirs, but flocks are frequently seen flying overhead in nonstop flight. It is a rare summer resident in the parks of the Elkhead Mountains and Park Range in eastern Moffat, northern Routt, and western Jackson counties. It also nests at Meeker, Rio Blanco County. Casual in mid-winter (four records).

Status: CDOW Small Game Bird
