Sora Porzana carolina
Habitat: Primarily occur in cattail marshes but locally reside in grassy or sedge marshes, wet meadows, and irrigated hayfields, especially in mountain parks.
Range in Colorado: Uncommon summer resident in western valleys, mountain parks, and on eastern plains. It is easily overlooked and may be fairly common, but it occurs in lower densities than the Virginia Rail (Griese et al. 1980). In addition to the major mountain parks, it occurs as a rare migrant and summer resident in many minor parks in the mountains. However, it is accidental above timberline (one record) and a very rare winter resident on eastern plains (19 records), occurringt near foothills. This species is casual in western valleys in Mesa, Pitkin, Delta, and Gunnison counties (seven records), and also has been recorded wintering in the San Luis Valley in Rio Grande and Alamosa counties.
