Virginia Rail Rallus limicola
Habitat: Primarily occurs in cattail marshes, wet meadows, and irrigated hayfields, especially at higher elevations. In winter they inhabit unfrozen cattail marshes and sloughs.
Range in Colorado: Uncommon summer resident in western valleys, mountain parks, and on eastern plains. Also occurs locally in mountains outside major parks (Packard 1945). This species is probably more numerous than most people realize; in the appropriate habitat it is probably fairly common. It is a rare winter resident in western valleys in Mesa, Delta, and Gunnison counties, the San Luis Valley in Rio Grande and Alamosa counties, and on eastern plains, mostly near foothills. During the winter, it is very local, occurring only where cattail marshes remain unfrozen. At any given site, the number of birds may decline as winter progresses, possibly due to mortality.
