Volunteer observers are important because public participation is a critical component of this project. In response to ongoing declines in populations and increasing recognition of the importance of amphibians and reptiles, the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) has contracted with Camp, Dresser & McKee (CDM) to design and begin implementation of the Colorado Herpetofaunal Atlas. The web-based Atlas will serve as the foundation for obtaining and evaluating current information on the status of salamander, frog, turtle, lizard, and snake populations throughout the state. The successful implementation of this project will allow the CDOW’s Species Conservation Section to better manage the state’s herpetofaunal resources. Volunteer observers can play a major role in providing much-needed data on the current distribution and abundance of Colorado’s amphibians and reptiles.
