Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does the MapIt! application work?
A: Check out the MapIt! tutorial pdf version.
Or the MapIt! tutorial html version.

Q: In IE7, why do the UTM coordinates not appear in the status bar?
A: Add our site: http://ndis.nrel.colostate.edu to your intranet security zone. To do this go to Tools, Internet Options, Security, Local Intranet, Sites, Advanced, Add this website to the zone. Type our address and press Add.

Q: What is an "American Elk Production Area"?
A: If you click on any Map Layer name in the Layer List, you will get a description of the data set. In this case Production Areas are, “That part of the overall range of elk occupied by the females from May 15 to June 15 for calving. (Only known areas are mapped and this does not include all production areas for the DAU).”

Q: Does you site use popup windows?
A: Yes. We have tried to minimize the use of spawned windows, but for ease of use, the MapIt! application does use pop-up windows for some of the tools, including the Find A Place tool, the Identify tool and the Email tool. If you are running a popup blocker, you will need to either turn it off, or add NDIS to your exception list.

Q: Why don't some of the map features line up?
A: This could be for several reasons, however it is most likely caused by viewing data that was collected or created at two different map scales. For information on map scale and how it effects data accuracy check out the following links: About.com Map Scale or Error, Accuracy, and Precision.

Q: Why doesn't all of the Interactive map appear when printing?
A: Make sure you set the print layout to Landscape before printing. You may also need to adjust the margins slightly.

Q: Why do some of the Big Game statistics maps appear blank?
A: This is a bug in how the map data is passed to your browser. As soon as we have a fix we will integrate into NDIS. Until then, there are a couple of quick fixes to this problem. 1) Reload the page until all of the map appears. 2) With Acrobat Reader, rotate the map. This should force a redraw. 3) With 5.1 and above, open Adobe Acrobat reader on your PC. Go to File - Preferences - General. Uncheck the box next to Web Browser Integration. Click OK.

Q: Can I save my map as an image file?
A: Yes. Once your map is configured the way you want it, click the print button. You may need to change you print setup to Landscape and refresh. Right click on the image and choose "Save picture As" You may also do this for the overview map and the legend.

Q: How should I cite an NDIS map?
A: There is some great information for citing maps here: http://library.owu.edu/citing222.html

Q: Does NDIS provide driving directions?
A: Yes and No. You can use the maps in the MapIt! site as a reference for directions once you zoom in to a place. Because of the large volume of data for the entire state, the site wasn't designed for driving directions. We thought we'd let the experts at places like mapquest.com provide these maps. That being said, it is a fairly short exercise to use NDIS in conjunction with MapQuest:

How do I get from Colorado Springs to Granby Reservoir?
  • Do a search for Granby Reservoir using the Find-A-Place function.
  • Zoom out until you find the closest town, which happens to be Cedaredge. You should see that once you got to Cedaredge, Granby Reservoir was to the north via highway 65.
  • Go to http://mapquest.com and ask for driving directions from the Springs to Cedaredge. You could fine tune this by entering your home address.
  • Once you get to Cedaredge, just keep going north on CO-65 until you get to Granby Reservoir.
