 Brown Trout
 Salmo trutta

Summary: One of the most successful introductions to Colorado, the brown trout was introduced in 1890 and is now abundant from high mountain streams to broad rivers flowing onto the plains. Brown trout move into small feeder tributaries in October and November searching for spawning beds with adequate gravel and rubble. One of the wariest of fish, brownies stump even a sophisticated angler. Streamers or small dry flies fished in late summer evenings can produce in rivers. Fall fishing with large flies and lures at lake inlets at dawn can land a lunker.

Status: Cold Water Game Fish
