 Rainbow Trout
 Salmo gairdneri

Summary: Introduced into Colorado in the 1880s, the rainbow trout has become both the angler's favorite and the mainstay of Colorado's hatchery system. The Colorado Division of Wildlife annually stocks approximately 4.5 million rainbow trout greater than 8 inches in length throughout Colorado. Famed for spectacular fighting abilities and culinary appeal, rainbow can best be caught during their prime feeding periods, early morning and late evening. As rainbow -- like all trout -- often display a selective feeding pattern, anglers should carry a diverse variety of baits, lures and flies.

Status: Cold Water Game Fish
