Summary: This ever-ready scrapper, introduced to Colorado in the late 1800s, has saved many an angling expedition. Feeding on aquatic and terrestial insects, brookies rise readily to the entire range of smaller lures, baits and flies. Fall spawners, males may mature in the first year of life and females in the second. Eggs may incubate five months before hatching, with 20-80 percent surviving the two years needed to reach catchable size (six inches). Extremely prolific, up to 3,500 brookies per acre may be found in some streams. Status: Cold Water Game Fish
