Northern Pike Esox lucius
Summary: Introduced in 1956, reproducing populations of northern pike have become established in larger Colorado lakes and rivers. Spawning over underwater vegetation immediately after ice-off, this fierce looking predator provides exciting angling in the spring and fall. Growing up to 15 inches in one year, pike eat other fish up to one-half of their own length. Large shallow running spoons and active live bait along with heavier tackle are a must to land a hard-fighting, 40-inch northern. Firm fleshed, coldwater northerns are good table fare fried or stuffed and baked. Status: Warm Water Game Fish
