 Black Crappie
 Pomoxis nigromaculatus

Summary: Introduced in 1882, crappie are now abundant in eastern Colorado impoundments. Black crappie prefer clear, weed-covered reservoirs. Spawning in 3 to 8 feet of water during the spring, males scoop out gravel nests crowded together among aquatic vegetation. Crappie are noticeably cyclic in population numbers. When this gregarious fish congregates in large schools during the spring, small jigs around submerged brush piles are an effective method for catching them. Flies or poppers at dusk also take fish.

Status: Warm Water Game Fish
