 Channel Catfish
 Ictalurus punctatus

Summary: Native to eastern Colorado, channel cats have been stocked in warmwater rivers and reservoirs throughout the state. Channels spawn in early summer when water temperatures reach between 70 and 80 degrees, with eggs laid in dark secluded lairs. Males guard nests and newly hatched fry for weeks. Night fishing, using a variety of bottom bait, including night crawlers, minnows, crayfish, chicken innards and flavored dough balls, provides the best action. Many fisherman let this wary, table-worthy fish run for several seconds on an open bail before setting the hook.

Status: Warm Water Game Fish
