Kokanee Salmon Oncorhynchus nerka
Summary: Kokanee, landlocked Pacific sockeye salmon, are suited to large fluctuating mountain reservoirs of Colorado. Swimming in compact schools, kokanee feed on zooplankton, a food source not affected by the drawing down of reservoirs. Usually at the end of the third summer, females change to a red-gray-white color and males develop a hook jaw while turning brick red. Some mature fish then ascend tributary streams to spawn and are trapped by Colorado Division of Wildlife personnel. Eggs collected from spawners are incubated in hatcheries and stocked back into reservoirs. Status: Cold Water Game Fish
