Crews using a GPS collected field data. Each field form was entered into an Informix database. An ArcView Avenue script was written to query the database, create a shapefile of the field data coordinates by watershed, and then convert that shapefile into an IMAGINE image for use in the class labeling process. A final classification dataset was created by grouping and labeling the classes using the above-mentioned database. Several ancillary datasets were used in conjunction with the point data. These were a DEM (digital elevation model), a slope image derived from the DEM, a 100k DLG hydrography line coverage, and RIS (resource inventory system) data from the Forest Service when available. Rules for elevation, slope, hydrology and RIS determinations varied by watershed based on the field data and visual analysis by the image processing specialist.
